COLLIERVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Memphis Tiger soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision in a preseason exhibition match against the Buccaneers from Christian Brothers at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex in Collierville, Friday night.
The Buccaneers gained the early lead after senior midfielder Tim Arnebold converted a cross from senior forward Benard Calasans at the 15:59 mark. CBU went into the break with the 1-0 advantage and didn't take long to give themselves some extra breathing room. Calasans scored on an assist from senior midfielder David Laird only seven minutes into the second period.
Memphis had a chance to break the shutout when CBU midfielder Ian Ford tripped Tiger defender Stephen Lewis (Houston HS) in the box late in the second half. Lewis was awarded a penalty shot, but CBU keeper Jake Aycock picked up one of his five saves and the shutout was preserved.
The Tigers, who arrived in Memphis at 2 a.m. this morning after a nine-day, five game exhibition tour of Ireland, looked sluggish. Memphis managed only one shot on goal in the first half and went in at the break down one. The Tigers then produced five second half attempts, however, moving the final shot total in favor of the Buccaneers.
Tonight's match was the first played at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex and the official attendance was announced at 1553.
The Tigers will now regroup and prepare for next weekend's trip to Omaha, Neb. for the Diadora Challenge at Creighton. Memphis is set to play the Missouri Vally Conference powerhouse and preseason No. 2 Creighton Bluejays on Saturday, September 1st at 7 p.m. CDT.
