STARKVILLE, MISS. - The University of Memphis Lady Tiger soccer team (7-7-0) knocked off the Bulldogs of Mississippi State (5-9-0) on Tuesday afternoon, 1-0. Memphis got the game-winner in the 20th minute when senior forward Michele Meehan (Immaculate Conception H.S.) took a deflected corner kick and slammed it home past Mississippi State keeper Kirstin Olson. This win snaps a two-game losing skid which began with a loss to Southern Miss on October 1st.
The Lady Tigers managed only seven shots compared with 13 for the Bulldogs but still came away with their seventh victory of the season.
The match featured a total of 29 fouls with 15 of them being charged to Memphis. Sophomore defender Ali Baker and junior defender Suzanne Williams received cautions in the physical win.
The goal was Meehan's first of the season and fourth of her career. Memphis is now 1-0 versus the SEC and will be looking to improve that mark when they travel to Nashville, Tenn. later this month, for a match against Vanderbilt University. The Lady Tigers have now won two-straight over Mississippi State, including last seasons 4-0 shutout in Memphis.
Memphis will return home for a two-game homestand which will feature two confernce matches, as well. On Friday, October 13th they will host the Cardinals of Louisville at 7 p.m. followed by a match on Sunday, October 15th where they will face the Bearcats of Cincinnati. Game time for that match is 1 p.m. Echles Field is the site.
