Lady Tigers Extend Home Win Streak

MEMPHIS, TN - Despite a cold and snowy setting the University of Memphis Lady Tiger basketball team (11-8, 5-3 Conference USA), knocked off C-USA foe Cincinnati (10-8, 4-4 Conference USA), 79-70 Friday night and stretched their home winning streak in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse to 13 straight.
Both squads shot fairly well from the field with the Lady Tigers shooting 48 percent, while the Bearcats were not far behind shooting 47 percent as a team.
Memphis led by as many as four points late in the first half after trading baskets and a share of the lead with Cincinnati, before entering the intermission up by three, 36-33.
The second half was all Memphis, as the Lady Tigers never lost the lead and dominated the rest of the contest. The Bearcats would get as close as four points with six minutes to play but ultimately ran out of gas before finally losing by nine. The Lady Tigers actually led by as many as 12 points in the second half, before sealing up the conference win.
Leading the way for Memphis was senior point guard Yolanda Reed who had 19 points, four steals and four assists in the win. Junior forward Tiffany Adkins was a force again for the Lady Tigers going for 16 points, including a 10-of-11 effort from the charity stripe. Freshman center Shannon Hamp contributed 11 points which featured a 5-of-5 shooting effort from the field, giving her the second best field goal percentage by a Lady Tiger all year. Sophomore center Malissa Bush was the leading rebounder with a season-high nine boards, and Junior forward Patrice Boyd chipped in with 10 points and four rebounds on the night.
As for Cincinnati, the bright spot in the loss was the play of Madinah Slaise, who was in the zone scoring a game-high 29 points and dishing out five assists. Also in double digits for the Bearcats was Nikki Groeber who finished up with 10 points in 21 minutes of play. Laura Wilder was the high rebounder for Cincinnati grabbing seven boards in the loss.
The Lady Tigers will host Louisville on Sunday at The Fieldhouse. The game is set for a 3 p.m. tip-off. WLMT-UPN 30 will broadcast the game live with Greg Gaston and former Lady Tiger Heather Phillips providing the commentary.
