Lady Tigers Struggle in Carrier Classic

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The University of Memphis Lady Tiger Basketball team dropped to 3-4 on the year after losing a 70-60 decision to Northern Iowa in the consolation game of the Carrier Classic hosted by Syracuse University.
Northern Iowa scored 18 of their final 29 points off of free-throw shots, led by Allison Starr who hit 11-of-13 shots from the charity stripe. Starr was sent to the free-throw line six times in the second half and only missed two of her 12 shots.
Junior forward Kelly Herron led the Lady Tigers' efforts with 16 points off a 5-of-12 shooting effort from the field. Junior guard Tiffany Collins was the only other Lady Tiger in double digits with a career-high 11 points.
Sophomore forward Melissa Abraham led the Lady Tigers in rebounding, boasting a career-high 12 boards. Abraham scored just three points versus Northern Iowa.
Three of Northern Iowa's starters scored in double digits, led by Starr with 21 points. Barb Bennett and Kary Dawson were the other starters with double figures with 18 points and 13 points, respectively. Bennett led UNI in rebounding with eight boards.
Memphis played strong on the boards, just one game after being outrebounded by Old Dominion. The Lady Tigers recorded 45 rebounds while UNI totaled 32 boards. The Lady Tigers shot 38.3 percent for the game while UNI shot 45.5 percent from the field. Memphis was 11-of-24 from the free-throw line while UNI was 27-of-34 from the line.
The Lady Tigers will return home to face the 3rd-ranked Tennessee Lady Vols on Tuesday, Dec. 7, at The Pyramid. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
