MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The University of Memphis Lady Tigers closed out their 1999 home schedule Sunday under gray skies against the Saint Louis Billikins (9-2-3). Senior forward Meredith Smith and fifth year senior goalkeeper Francis Currin were honored for their dedication and years on the Lady Tigers soccer team during a pre-game ceremony. Smith ranks second on th Lady tigers career scoring list, whole Currin leads the category of career saves with 230.
The game that followed was another tight one for the Lady Tigers (4-11-0). Saint Louis is among the leaders of Conference-USA and brought a very physical and challenging game to Memphis. The Lady Tigers were quick to respond and they were able to hold the Billikins scoreless for over 80 minutes. However, with under ten minutes remaining in regulation, Katie Stewart launched a rainbow shot from 30 yards out that sailed over Currin's head into the net. That would be the only score of the game, which was highlighted by excellent defensive play from both sides.
The Lady Tigers next play at Cincinnati on October 22nd, followed by a game at Louisville on the 24th. They close out their season on the 29th of October against UAB in Birmingham, followed by the Conference-USA tournament in Farmer's Branch, TX on November 3rd.
