Wanda Hooker Liggins set several track records at The University of Memphis in her four seasons after graduating from East High School. After starting hot her freshman season and winning the 100 meters in her National AAU Age Group, she became an AIAW All-American as a sophomore and junior in the 200 meters. As a sophomore, she also qualified for the AIAW Nationals in the 100, 200, 440, and mile relays. Hooker’s 11.40 100 meters in 1978 is still a University of Memphis outdoor record, as is her 54.40 400 meters. She is still tied with Kennan Gibson (2003) with a 23.36 200 meters for the Memphis record. Later, as a Memphis area police officer, Liggins won the women’s senior (over 30) 200-meter dash and came in second in the 100 meters at the World Police and Fire Games in 1991.
