Sandra Monce Garner was a part of a 125-67 record in her four years at the net for The University of Memphis volleyball team. As a sophomore in 1978, Garner was named to three all-tournament teams (Ole Miss, UT-Martin, Memphis), and was a member of the Southern All-Star team at the National Sports Festival, where she was the MVP of the USVBA Southern Region. As a junior, she led Memphis to the AIAW Regional Tournament, and selected to try out for the U.S. National Team. As a senior in 1980, Garner led Memphis to a first place finish at the TCWSF Championship. The Lady Tigers finished fourth at the AIAW Regional, and Garner was named MVP of the first Metro Conference Championship Tournament. Garner competed in the 1980 Florida Sunshine State Games, and then became the first Lady Tiger to have her jersey number retired (#9). Gardner now lives in Daytona Beach, Fla., where she teaches and coaches volleyball at Mainland High School.
