Richard Vollmer was one of the finest track athletes in Tiger history. He ran track for coach Glen Johnson from 1958-60. When he graduated from Memphis he held five indoor and outdoor track records in the sprints and long jump. Vollmer was the record holder in the indoor 60-yard dash, the long jump, the 100-yard dash, the 220-yard dash and in the 440 relay, the 880 relay and the mile relay. Vollmer, a native of Memphis and the brother of football great Russell Vollmer, was the recipient of the Athlete of the Year Award in 1959. After graduation, Vollmer began a career in banking. After ten years with First Tennessee National in Memphis, he moved to Miami, Florida, and worked for twenty years with First Union National Bank of Florida. Vollmer retired from the banking industry in Florida and moved to Lakeview, Arkansas, where he worked for Peoples Bank & Trust in Mountain Home, Arkansas.
