Paul Haynes came to Memphis State in the fall of 1947 and for three years played football, basketball and ran track for the Tigers. He started as a right halfback for Ralph Hatley’s Tiger football team and during his first season had four consecutive games in which he scored a touchdown. Haynes tallied scores against Centenary College, Murray State, Union University and Arkansas State. The Tigers defeated Centenary 26-7 in a game that MSU entered as the underdog. Following football season, Haynes moved to the hardwood and started for the Tiger basketball team. He helped his teams to a record of 36-29 over a three year span. An all-round athlete, Haynes participated as a member of the Tiger track team as well. Following graduation he taught, coached and served as principal at Germantown High School.
