Nick Pappas, a tailback and kick returner for former head coach Billy J. Murphy, will long be remembered for his kickoff return for a touchdown that helped Memphis defeat Ole Miss for the first time in school history. The Corning, New York, native came to the Tigers in 1965. The speedy Pappas had his most outstanding season in 1967. As a tailback he had 245 yards rushing but as a kick returner he ranked fourth in the nation with 17 returns for 527 yards and two touchdowns. His 93-yard return against Ole Miss helped the Tigers to their first win ever against the Rebels. Following graduation Pappas worked in insurance management and became the owner/manager of Jackson (TN) Diary Products, Inc. He currently is the Executive Director of Youth Town of Tennessee, a Christian based center for abused children. He also serves as the pastor of New Beginnings Fellowship in Jackson and serves as a football coach at Lambuth College in Jackson.
