Lou McLelland

A native of Roanoke, Virginia, Lou McLelland was just the second Tiger football All-American in school history. An end, McLelland played football during the 1949 through 1951 seasons. He was voted the team’s Most Valuable Player and Best Lineman Award in 1951, the same year that he received Williamson All-American honors. He coached football at Southside High School in Memphis following graduation. In 1952, he was drafted into the United States Army and played football at Fort Belvior under head coach Al Davis, the current owner of the Oakland Raiders. After his discharge from the Army, McLelland returned to Memphis and coached under Ralph Hatley before deciding to return to Virginia to join IBM. He was transferred to Charlotte, NC and after an early retirement in 1987, started his own business, the Management Training Institute.
