John Lee came to then Memphis State College from Newton, Massachusetts in 1956 under former head coach Ralph Hatley and played end for the Tiger football team through the 1959 season. Lee was considered one of the team’s top blockers and stood out in the Tigers’ run oriented offense. As a junior he did have two pass receptions for 53 yards. He served as captain of the 1959 team under head coach Billy J. Murphy. After graduating with an education degree, he returned to Massachusetts and entered the coaching and teaching profession. He became the most successful prep coach in the history of the state and posted a career winning percentage of 85.5%. He won 10 Bay State League titles and three Prep Super Bowl Championships.
