John “Jumbo” Evans was a four year letterman and three year starter for The University of Memphis under former head coach Billy J. Murphy. An offensive lineman, Evans received preseason all-America honors in 1964 but was later lost for the season due to a knee injury. He returned to action and despite being drafted by both the St. Louis Cardinals and the Buffalo Bills, he elected to remain in school to play his senior season under Murphy. In addition to his football talents, Evans was also a gifted boxer. He won the South Memphis championship and the city heavyweight title in the 1960s. After graduation, Evans became the head football coach at Middleton Township High in Middleton, NJ. Through his career, his teams won five Shore Conference titles, had 55 consecutive wins and back-to-back state titles.
