Hillman Robbins is the most decorated golfer in University history. He resume both as an amateur and professional golfer is outstanding and his records and honors still stand as a benchmark for current Tiger linksters. Robbins, a native of Memphis, Tennessee, signed with coach Larry Smith in 1950-51 after winning the state of Tennessee Junior Championship. He immediately took over the number one position and went on to win the Tennessee Intercollegiate Athletic Conference crown and the Southern Intercollegiate that first year. As a sophomore, Robbins won the Colonial Invitational, the Memphis City championship and the Southern Intercollegiate. In 1953-54 Robbins won the Colonial Invitational for the third consecutive year. He also laid claim to the Tennessee state championship, the Southeastern PGA and the Tennessee Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setting the stage for his senior season at Memphis. Building on his reputation as perhaps the finest amateur golfer in the state of Tennessee, if not the nation, Robbins won the Houston Open, the Southern Intercollegiate, the Tennessee Open, the Colonial Invitational and ended his final college season winning the NCAA Golf Championship, the first national championship in Memphis history. Robbins was named as an alternate to the 1954 Walker Cup Team and weeks later added the United State National Amateur Championship. He returned to Memphis after a professional career and became the golf pro at Colonial Country Club and Galloway Golf Club. Robbins passed away in the 1970s.
