Chuck Brooks, from Oak Park, Ill., was one of the first football All-Americans in University of Memphis history. He participated on teams that registered some of the best seasons in school history in the early 1960s, including the undefeated 1963 team. Aside from his crushing blocks, Brooks also caught eight passes for 109 yards and a touchdown in 1963. That season, Brooks was named First Team All-American by Football News All-America and Williamson’s All-America. Brooks was named Honorable Mention All-America by Detroit Sports Extra All-America. He was a captain on the 1964 team coached by Billy J. Murphy, and caught nine passes for 127 yards and a score.. After his playing career at The University of Memphis, Brooks signed with the St. Louis Cardinals. After graduation in 1965, Brooks also helped establish what later became the Letterman’s Club.
