Andy Porter was an offensive and defensive tackle for the Tigers in the late 1920s and early 1930s. The Florence, Alabama, native arrived in Memphis in the fall of 1929 and immediately was identified as a future star player. In 1929, “Pete Porter”, as he was nicknamed, helped his 25 Tiger teammates to an 8-0-2 undefeated season and the Mississippi Valley Conference title. In 1930, the Zach Curlin coached team finished the season with a 6-3-1 record and again claimed the Mississippi Valley Conference championship. Porter had developed into an exception tackle and would be elected team captain for the 1931 campaign. With the onset of the Great Depression and the squad was limited in size in 1931 and 1932 and the team’s record was hard hit. Memphis one just one time in 1931 and finished the ‘32 season with a 4-5-0 record.
