Late Inning Rally Lifts Memphis Past Wichita State
Mar 25, 2018 | Softball
Tigers hold off Shockers for series win and improve to 23-8 on the year
Â
Memphis took an early lead over Wichita State after Kyler Trosclair Klatt recorded a two-RBI single and Addison Maxwell drew a bases loaded walk. The Shockers answered two innings later with a two-run shot to cut the Memphis lead down to one, 3-2.
Â
A four-run fourth inning which including Ashley Threatt's team-leading sixth home run of the season put Memphis up 7-2 over the Shockers. Two runs in the bottom half of the fourth, however, combined with three in the sixth by Wichita State tied up the contest at 7-7. The Shockers threatened to score in the home half of the seventh, but a big strikeout looking by freshman Mariah Nichols got the Tigers out of the jam.
Â
A single up the middle by Kendall Lee that was extended two more bases due to a fielding error by the Shockers centerfielder resulted in two runs crossing the plate in the top of the eighth. Memphis added one more insurance run after Trosclair Klatt drove in Lee for her fourth RBI of the contest.
Â
Mariah Nichols finished the contest in relief for Molly Smith and improved to 9-4 on the year. Smith and Nichols combined for seven strikeouts in eight innings of work.
