Tigers Split Day Two of Lady Demon Classic
Feb 16, 2018 | Softball
Molly Smith and Bayleigh Wisher throw combined no-no in win over Jackson State
NATCHITOCHES, La. – After dropping game one of the day to Stephen F. Austin, the University of Memphis softball team bounced back with a commanding victory over Jackson State. The Tigers first fell to the Ladyjacks by a score of 3-1 before turning it around offensively to defeat Jackson State, 11-0. Memphis moves to 4-3 on the year with one game remaining in the Lady Demon Classic.
Â
"We settled in a little quicker in the second game offensively," said head coach Natalie Poole. "We were able to steal bases and come through with some timely hits, which we needed. We had the opportunity to be in the game because Molly (Smith) pitched well. We made the plays needed behind her and we made improvements in all three areas of the game, hitting, pitching, and defense."
Â
Although Memphis outhit SFA, 5-4, the Ladyjacks made one of their hits count with a three-run home run in the top of the sixth inning. Memphis answered with one in the bottom half of the frame, but it proved not to be enough. Mariah Nichols pitched a complete game and was handed her second loss of the season against the Ladyjacks.
Â
The Memphis offense came around in game two and was coupled by a stellar outing in the circle by Molly Smith. The Tigers strung together four hits in the third inning including Kyler Trosclair Klatt's second triple of the day to take a 3-0 lead over Jackson State.
Â
Four more hits in the fourth led to eight total runs as Memphis broke open the flood gates against Jackson State. In the top of the fifth, Bayleigh Wisher saw her first action in the circle and helped finish off the first Memphis no-hitter since the 2012 season. Smith finished with 11 strikeouts in her second win of the year.
