Memphis unable to overcome early scoring by the Knights

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis softball team fell in the rubber match Sunday afternoon to UCF by a score of 10-6 at the Tigers Softball Complex. The Tigers drop to 23-18 on the year and 4-5 in American Athletic Conference play.

Memphis was unable to overcome early scoring by UCF as the Knights put up five runs in the first three innings.

The Tigers got runs back in the third, fifth, sixth, and seventh, but UCF had an answer to keep its distance from Memphis. After the Tigers already scored two in the bottom of the sixth, a foul ball by Lindsey Stickrod landed just inches away from being another hit that could have resulted in more Tiger runs crossing the plate. UCF then pitched into a timely double play to get out of the inning.

Memphis threatened again in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded and no one out, but a line drive turned into a triple play for the Knights to end the contest.

There were a combined 36 hits in the game with just one error committed. Christian Novak was dealt the loss and she falls to 8-8 on the year.

Notables

Lindsay Crowdus tallied her fourth, four hit contest of the season. Crowdus recorded a hit in every game this weekend.
Memphis recorded double-digit hits for the 13^th time this season.
The 17 hits were a season-high by the Tigers.
Crowdus finished the weekend going 7-for-11 with three runs batted in and Addison Maxwell also added seven hits.
The Tigers ended with 39 hits this weekend with an on base percentage of .530.

Scoring

Top 1 – UCF led the game off with a single to centerfield. That runner advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored two singles later. One more run scored on a dropped fly ball by Memphis. (2 runs, 3 hits, 1 error, 3 left on base)
Top 3 – A single up the middle combined with a sacrifice bunt and a single to right led to the first run of the inning scoring. With two outs and runners on first and second, UCF singled to right field to increase its lead to 4-0. A bunt single to the pitcher scored the third run in the inning. (3 runs, 5 hits, 0 errors, 2 left on base)
Bottom 3 – Three straight singles by Addison Maxwell, Lindsay Crowdus, and Tyler Johnson led to the first Memphis run of the game. (1 run, 3 hits, 0 errors, 2 left on base)
Top 4 – A double combined with a single to third base put runners on second and third with no outs for UCF. A sacrifice bunt scored the first run of the inning and a single up the middle scored the second. (2 runs, 3 hits, 0 errors, 1 left on base)
Bottom 5 – The first four batters in the inning reached base by way of three hits and a walk, scoring the first run of the inning. Another single to right field by Xiomara Santiago scored Crowdus who was at third. (2 runs, 4 hits, 0 errors, 2 left on base)
Top 6 – A pair of singles with one out scored a Knight. Three batters, a ground out, and two singles later, the Knights scored their second and third runs of the inning. (3 runs, 4 hits, 0 errors, 1 left on base)
Bottom 6 – Hannah Harrell led the inning off with a walk. Three straight singles by Kyler Trosclair, Maxwell, and Crowdus scored two runs. (2 runs, 3 hits, 0 errors, 2 left on base)
Bottom 7 – Erin Parker singled to the pitcher to lead off the bottom of the seventh. A walk to Santiago and a single by Harrell loaded the bases for Trosclair. She proceeded to single to shallow left, scoring Parker. (1 run, 3 hits, 0 errors, 1 left on base)
