Memphis ends season with 26-31 overall record
TULSA, OKLA. – Meeting for the fourth straight game the Memphis Tigers and Houston Cougars needed 10 innings to decide a winner, as the Cougars used a sacrifice fly to claim a 5-4 win in the opening round of the American Athletic Conference Tournament.
Jessie Lamb was 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored, while Lindsay Crowdus was 2-for-5. Tyler Johnson drove in two runs while going 1-for-4 at the plate, with Brittany Seale and Kyler Trosclair each going 1-for-4. Crowdus and Breana Valenzuela each scored a run, as Crowdus and Lamb each drove in one.
The teams battled for the first two innings, with neither team recording a hit, until the top of the third inning.
Trosclair opened the third inning with an infield single. A sacrifice bunt from Regan Hadley advanced her to second, before Jessie Lamb drew a walk. Trosclair was thrown out at third base trying to advance on a wild pitch, with Lamb going to second. A passed ball advanced Lamb to third, before Lindsay Crowdus singled to center field, pushing the visitors to a 1-0 advantage.
The Cougars did not get their first hit of the game until the fifth inning when Megan Noel opened the inning with a single, and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Once at second base Noel was lifted for pinch-runner Jaylin Baldridge, who advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on a Kaylin Crumpton single.
In the next half-inning Memphis got an inning-opening infield single from Lamb, which was followed by a bunt single by Crowdus. A swinging strikeout followed, before a groundout to the second baseman move the batters ahead a base. A batter late, Johnson drilled a single to center field, driving in the pair on base, and giving Memphis a 3-1 lead.
The margin reached three runs an inning later when Seale led off with a single to left field, and was lifted for pinch-runner Valenzuela. She advanced two bases on a pair of wild pitches, before Lamb ripped a single through the right side of the infield to put Memphis ahead 4-1.
In the bottom of the seventh inning the Cougars used some two-out magic with a single up the middle, a triple to right field and a two-run home run to tie the score at four runs apiece.
Each team saw nothing happen offensively for the eighth and ninth innings, before Houston saw the first two batters in the 10th inning reach base on a walk and a double, before Thomas hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring pinch runner Presley Bell for the eventual game-winning run.
Christian Novak pitched the first six and two-thirds of an inning for the Tigers, giving up six hits and four runs (three earned) while striking out one. Molly Smith pitched the final two and two-thirds inning and gave up three hits and the final run, falling to 11-16 on the year.
