Tigers Snap Skid with 5-4 Win
Apr 23, 2016 | Softball
Win ends overall losing streak at five games, and series losing streak at seven games
ORLANDO – Memphis got a three-run second inning, and then scored two more runs in the fourth, before holding on late in a 5-4 American Athletic Conference win at UCF on Saturday afternoon.
Lindsay Crowdus went 2-for-3 at the plate including a three-run double, while Hannah Harrell, Lindsey Stickrod, Kyler Trosclair, Regan Hadley, and Jessie Lamb each had a hit. Trosclair and Lamb each scored twice in the win.
Memphis (23-25, 5-6 AAC) put a runner on base in the top of the first inning when Harrell drew a one-out walk, and then added to her single-season school record with a stolen base; however, a pop up and a strikeout ended the threat.
UCF (30-16, 7-2 AAC) returned the favor with a one-out single and a stolen base, but was left stranded two bases away from scoring.
In the second inning the Tigers got some two-out magic, starting when Trosclair reached on a fielding error by the Knight third baseman. Hadley and Lamb followed with back-to-back walks to load the bases, before Crowdus doubled to left field, scoring the three runners, and pushing the Tigers to a 3-0 advantage.
Memphis added to its lead in the fourth inning, as Trosclair hit a one-out infield single, before Hadley doubled her home. An infield single scored Lamb; however, the throw to third base nabbed Hadley for the second out of the inning. A bunt single from Crowdus put runners on first and second, before Harrell singled through the left side, scoring Lamb for the second time in the game.
UCF in the fourth inning and Memphis in the fifth put one runner each on base, before the hosts opened their scoring in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring five times, and cutting the gap to 5-4.
After the Tigers were sat down in order in the top of the sixth inning, UCF saw its leadoff hitter reach on an infield single, and a sac bunt a batter later moved the runner to second; however, was caught off base and forced out. From there, no other Knight batter reached base as Molly Smith earned her first save of the season.
Christian Novak improved to 3-4 on the season as she pitched the first four and two-thirds of an inning, striking out one and allowing seven hits and four runs. Katie Brignac pitched a third of an inning in relief, while Smith pitched the final two frames, striking out one and allowing one hit, facing the minimum amount of batters in her appearance.
The Tigers and Knights meet at 10 a.m. CT on Sunday morning to battle for the series victory.
