Apr 15, 2016 | Softball
Tigers held to one in second shutout allowed this season
MEMPHIS, Tenn. –Memphis gave up five fourth-inning runs, as the team fell to the 22nd ranked USF Bulls on Friday night by an 8-0 score in the first of a three-game American Athletic Conference series.
Memphis (22-21, 4-3 AAC) was held to just one hit – from Kyler Trosclair, as the team had two players reach base in the contest.
South Florida (37-10, 9-1 AAC) had eight hits over the five innings, as they were able to take advantage of five Tiger errors.
Memphis threatened in the first inning when Lindsay Crowdus drew an inning-opening walk, was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Hannah Harrell, and then caught the Bulls' defense napping, using a delayed steal to move a base away from the plate; however, a strikeout and a groundout ended the threat in the inning.
The teams played to a scoreless first inning, before the Bulls used a sacrifice fly from leadoff hitter Kristen Wyckoff to take a 1-0 lead.
Neither team could find the plate in the third inning, despite Trosclair picking up the team's only hit of the game. An inning later South Florida was aided by two Tiger errors in the fourth inning, scoring five times, taking a 6-0 lead. Two more Memphis errors in the fifth inning helped move along two runs, to give the game its eight-run margin, ending the game after five innings.
Molly Smith picked up the loss for the Tigers, falling to 9-10 on the year. She pitched the first three innings, giving up seven hits while striking out three, allowing six runs – five earned.
Cassidy Boyle was 3-for-3 for USF with two runs scored, while Wyckoff was 2-for-3. Erica Nunn improved to 21-6 on the season as she gave up one hit and struck out six, walking one.
The teams return to action on Saturday, April 16, in a 2 p.m. first pitch at the Tigers Softball Complex.
