Tigers Rally from Early Deficit in Fourth Straight Win
Mar 16, 2016 | Softball
Regan Hadley had a two-run double to lead the Tigers
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - After trailing 1-0 after one inning, the Memphis Tigers rallied for two runs in the second and two more in the fifth to secure the program's fourth straight win, a 4-2 victory over the Belmont Bruins.
Calli Irvin pitched the final 6 2/3 inning in relief, picking up the victory - her third of the season - while giving up one unearned run in the process. Each of Memphis' three hits were doubles, one each from Brittany Seale, Tyler Johnson, and Regan Hadley.
Belmont squeezed an unearned run across in the bottom of the first inning before a bases-loaded pitcher-to-catcher-to-first base inning-ending double play ended a chance for more potential damage.Â
In the top of the second, the Tigers got walks from Brooke Lee and Hannah Harrell, before Hadley hit a two-run double off of the wall in left field, giving Memphis a narrow lead.
The Memphis advantage did not last long, as Belmont used a one-out triple to tie the score; however, the Bruins left left fielder Hayley Baker stranded at third following a groundout and a line-out.
Neither team could find the scoreboard in the third and fourth innings, before the Tigers used timely baserunning, bunts and a pair of Bruin errors to squeeze two runs across in the fifth inning. Lindsay Crowdus opened the fifth inning by reaching on a fielding error by the Belmont shortstop.
After stealing second base, Crowdus scored when Kyler Trosclair bunted to the Belmont pitcher, whose throw sailed over the first baseman's head. Trosclair stole second base, was advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Jessie Lamb, and scored on a safety squeeze off the bat of Seale, giving Memphis the 4-2 lead.
Over the final two and a half innings, neither team could find the scoreboard, securing the 4-2 win for the Tigers.Â
Molly Smith got the start for the Tigers, but struggled with control early and was lifted after a hit and a walk in the bottom of the first inning.
Belmont had 10 hits in the loss, including three from Jessica Wilson.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, March 19 and Sunday, March 20, when the team hosts Cleveland State for one game and Northern Kentucky for a pair over the weekend.
