Softball Drops Two Games at Florida Gulf Coast
Feb 12, 2016 | Softball
Seale and Trosclair both go .500 on first day of 2016 season.
MEMPHIS – Lindsey Stickrod hit a grand slam to push Memphis up 4-1, but Illinois-Chicago answered with a grand slam of their own in an 11-7 Flames win at the Florida Gulf Coast tournament, Friday. The loss followed a 4-3 Tiger loss to Kent State that saw relief pitcher Ronnie Ladines drive in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. The Tigers were be back on the diamond, Saturday, for another pair of non-conference games, facing Middle Tennessee (9 a.m. ET) and Florida Gulf Coast (11:15 a.m. ET).
Kent State 4, Memphis 3 | Box Score
Kent State pitcher Ronnie Ladines decided to help her own cause and hit a walk-off single, also picking up the win after facing just three hitters, as Kent State (2-0) came back in the bottom of the seventh for a 4-3 win over Memphis (0-1) in the Tigers' season opener at the Florida Gulf Coast tournament, Friday.
NOTES:
- Three Tigers made their first career Memphis starts. Junior college transfers Lindsey Stickrod (1B) and Brittany Seale (C) both started, as did freshman Tyler Johnson (3B).
- In the Tigers' first at-bat of the 2016 season, right fielder Kyler Trosclair singled. The Tigers would move her to third base, before she was stranded. She would go 2-for-3 against Kent State with a sacrifice hit and two stolen bases.
- Kent State got on the board first when Maddy Grimm drew a walk and later scored. The Tigers had caught the runner before Grimm at the plate, but KSU took a 2-0 lead at the end of the first when shortstop Holly Speers scored from third on an error. Kent State would stand 13 runners on the day.
- Memphis answered back in the top of the fifth. Addison Maxwell drew a walk. Trosclair then put down a sac bunt that drew a KSU throwing error, allowing her to move to third and scoring Maxwell. Hannah Harrell singled and then Johnson singled to right field, picking up two RBI. Johnson would go 1-for-3 in her first collegiate game.
- With Memphis up 3-2, the Tigers went to the bottom of the seventh with the lead. Molly Smith got first baseman Shelbi Tilton to flyout for the first out, but left fielder Bailey Brownfield singled to put the tying run on. A pinch runner was inserted for Brownfield and advanced to second on a Jen Cader single. Catcher Erika Warren then doubled to center field, scoring the pinch runner to tie the game and moving Cader, and the go-ahead run, to third. Pitcher Ronnie Ladines, who had come in at the top of the seventh, then singled to center field, scoring the go ahead run and giving herself the pitching win.
- Memphis' Molly Smith picked up the loss, giving up four runs, two earned, while striking out four and walking four in 6.1 innings pitched.
- Ronnie Ladines picked up the win for Kent State, facing three batters, inducing two groundouts and a pop up and hitting the game-winning single.
Illinois-Chicago 11, Memphis 7 | Box Score
Lindsey Stickrod hit a grand slam in the bottom of the third inning to put Memphis up 4-1, but Illinois-Chicago (1-1) would answer with a nine-run fifth inning, including a grand slam of their own, and would hold on for an 11-7 win over the Tigers (0-2) in Memphis' second game of the Florida Gulf Coast tournament.
NOTES:
- For a big part of the early innings, the Tigers' battery consisted of players who could be seniors in high school. Starting pitcher Adriana Morgan and catcher Regan Hadley both graduated a semester early from high school and joined the Memphis roster in January of this year. Both were making their first collegiate starts against UIC.
- In the second inning, Hadley threw out UIC's LaRi Mitchell trying to steal second base.
- In the third inning, junior college transfer Lindsey Stickrod hit a grand slam over the right field wall, her first Memphis homerun. That was the first grand slam for Memphis since Calli Irvin hit one against Wisconsin on Mar. 14th of 2015.
- Memphis tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Freshman Jessie Lamb pinch hit for Lindsay Crowdus, drawing a walk. She advanced to second on a Regan Hadley sacrifice bunt and moved to third when Trosclair singled to left field. A Hannah Harrell single scored Lamb and a Brittany Seale single scored Trosclair. That chased UIC pitcher Karissa Frazier out of the game, bringing in Bridget Boyle. Boyle got the a ground out to end the inning, stranding two Tigers. For the game, Memphis left six runners on.
- The fifth inning opened with an error for Memphis on the opening hitter, and after three runs had scored, the bases were loaded when sophomore Katie Brignac was brought it at pitcher. Designated player Jasmine Willis then hit a grand slam of her own to push UIC ahead, 7-6. Molly Smith, who also pitched game one for Memphis earlier in the day, stepped in to close out the game, but UIC plated two more runs for the 9-6 lead by the time Memphis could get out of the inning.
- UIC added one run in the sixth for its final 11 run total.
- Memphis did get one run back with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Tyler Johnson singled to left field and advanced to third on a double from Strickrod. Brooke Lee then scored Johnson with a single to left field, moving pinch runner Breana Valenzuela over to third. But Memphis grounded out to end the game, falling to 0-2.
- Boyle picked up the win for UIC to move to 1-0 and Brignac took the loss for Memphis to fall to 0-1.
- Both Brittany Seale and Trosclair were .500 for the day Friday (2-for-4); Trosclair scored three runs and had four stolen bases.
