MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The University of Memphis men's basketball squad dominated the boards en route to a 77-49 victory against Prairie View A&M in a non-bracket game of the 2014 Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational at FedExForum Monday.
The Tigers (1-1) out-rebounded the Panthers (0-5) 42-23, with all but two Memphis players pulling down a rebound. Twelve of the 42 Tigers rebounds came at the offensive end. Trahson Burrell led the Mmephis with nine, while Nick King brought down eight of his own.
Junior forward Shaq Goodwin led the Tigers in scoring with 16 points on a perfect 6-of-6 from the field and 4-of-6 from the line. He was the only Memphis player in double figures. The rest of the scoring was spread out evenly, as 10 Tigers recorded points.
Tre Hagood and John Brisco led the Panthers in scoring with 16 and 11 points, respectively.
Prarie View A&M took the lead 31 seconds into the game after a Hagood steal resulted in a Brisco layup on the other end. The lead would be short-lived, as a three pointer at the 17:47 mark from Markel Crawford gave the Tigers a lead they never relinquished.
The UofM quickly extended its lead, reaching double-digits with a pair of free throws from Austin Nichols making it 13-2 at the 14-minute mark of the first half. The Panthers finally stopped the bleeding on a Nolan Wilson layup after Memphis rattled off 15-straight points.
At the 6:45 mark, a Nichols dunk pushed the lead to 30-11, which was the largest of the half. At the half, the Tigers lead was 38-23. The Tigers shot 60 percent from the field and 37.5 percent from beyond the arc in the first half, while limiting the Panthers to 34.5 percent from the field and only 12.5 percent from distance. The Memphis bench accounted for half of the 38 points in the first period.
In the second half, two free throws from Calvin Godfrey gave the Tigers a 20-point lead with a little more than 14 minutes remaining. The lead would stay above 20 the remainder of the game.
Kedren Johnson gave Memphis its biggest lead of the night at 33 points with a jumper to make it 65-32 with 8:42 remaining.
The lead gave Memphis head coach Josh Pastner a chance to use his bench, as it accounted for 23 of the team's 39 points in the second half. Ten of the 11 Tigers that played in the game scored, and all but one played in more than 10 minutes.
The final Memphis field goal came from Burrell, who tipped in a missed jumper from Godfrey to make it 77-47 with under a minute to go. Prairie View hit a couple of free throws on the other end and then allowed Memphis to run out the clock.
Memphis shot 50 percent (24-of-48) in the game, while the Panthers shot 34.5 percent (20-of-58) in both halves.
The Tigers garnered assists on 15 of their 24 field goals and shot 75 percent (24-of-32) from the line. The bench scored 42 points, while limiting the Panthers' bench players to 13 points.
Next up for the Tigers is a trip to Las Vegas, Nev., to take on the Baylor Bears in the next matchup of the Invitational on Thursday night. Tipoff is at 11 p.m. (CT) on Fox Sports 1.
