MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis softball team split a pair of games on day two of the Blues City Classic Saturday at the Tiger Softball Complex. The Tigers (3-11) came from behind to earn an 8-7, 10-inning victory against Western Illinois before falling 3-2 to Northern Iowa.
Down 5-2 to Western Illinois (4-8) after two innings, Memphis scored three run in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game. With the international tie-breaker rule in effect in extra innings, the Tigers then rallied to score two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to match two scored by the Leathernecks in the top of the inning. Freshman Breslin Perry then delivered a two-out single up the middle to score freshman Kassy Dunn in the bottom of the 10th for the victory. The win snapped an eight-game losing streak for Memphis.
The Tigers then had a 1-0 lead over Northern Iowa (6-2) heading into the bottom of the sixth inning of the second game. A home run by Courtney Dunker tied the game but the Tigers scored a run to go up 2-1 in the top of the seventh on a RBI single by Perry. The Panthers then hit a two-out, two-strike triple to tie the game in the bottom of the 7th by Samantha Reimer. Olivia Aten followed with a walk-off RBI single to give UNI a 3-2 victory.
Memphis had 11 hits against Western Illinois. Junior Morgan Mosby went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. She led off the bottom of the first with her first career home run, a solo shot to left. Senior Jessica Phillips went 2-for-4 with two RBI and sophomore Libby Goranson had a pinch hit two-run single in the ninth.
Junior Carly Hummel (1-3) earned the victory in relief. She allowed two runs on five hits with four strikeouts in eight and a third innings.
Against Northern Iowa, junior Laura Curtis led Memphis with a 2-for-3 performance. Sophomore Ashleigh King drove in a run on a double, and Dunn went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
Sophomore Ellen Roberts (1-4) struck out a career high 10 batters in the loss. Roberts allowed three runs on seven hits in six and two-third innings.
Memphis will close out the tournament on Sunday against Missouri State and Southeast Missouri State beginning at 1 p.m.
