Memphis Splits Doubleheader with UAB

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis softball team split a doubleheader with UAB on Saturday at the Tiger Softball Complex.
After falling 4-2 in game one, the Tigers (32-11, 12-7 C-USA) came back to earn a 1-0 shutout over the Blazers (34-16, 14-6) in game two.
Memphis honored a program high seven seniors prior to the start of the games. Senior LHP Janelle Valle then threw her third shutout of the season and seventh of her career in game two. Valle (6-2) scattered five hits and struck out seven with one walk.
Sophomore center fielder Kamri Chester drove in the only run in the victory with a solo homer to left in the bottom of the sixth inning. The home run is the first of the season for the Chattanooga, Tenn., native and second of her career.
Memphis improves to 10-4 this season in one run games, but had a program record 10-game winning streak come to an end in game one.
UAB took an early 2-0 lead in the first game with a run in the first and third innings. Memphis tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third on a two-run double by Maddie McKinley, but the Blazers scored a run in the fourth and seventh innings to win 4-2.
Senior Heather Mott increased her hitting streak to a school record tying 14 games with single in game one and a 2-for-3 performance in game two. McKinley also had her streak move to 11 games in the first contest, before going hitless in game two.
Memphis recorded 10 hits in the two games with Mott, Chester and Lelani Bernardino all going 2-for-3 in game two's victory.
Sophomore RHP Carly Hummel (18-5) suffered the loss in game one for Memphis bringing an end to her streak of seven consecutive victories. Hummel allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits with five strikeouts.
UAB's Alisha Smith (10-4) earned the victory in game one, allowing two runs on three hits with two strikeouts. Leigh Streetman picked up her seventh save in the victory. Streetman then suffered the loss in game two, allowing one run on six hits with eight strikeouts.
Memphis and UAB will play the rubber match of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
