Memphis Sweeps Doubleheader with UCF; Wins Game Two 4-1

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis softball team won its ninth-straight with a 4-1 victory over UCF to complete a doubleheader sweep on Friday night at the Tiger Softball Complex.
The nine wins in a row is a program record, surpassing the previous best of eight games, which had been accomplished earlier this season as well as in 2007. The win is also the 30th on the season for Memphis (30-10, 10-6 C-USA), marking just the second time the Tigers have reached the 30-victory plateau.
Memphis scored four runs on nine hits, including two-hit performances by Heather Mott and Maddie McKinley. Mott went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and two runs scored and has hit safely in a season long 11-straight games, which matches a career high. She has reached base safely in 16-straight games and is hitting .510 during the stretch.
McKinley finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and has a nine-game hitting streak. Jessica Phillips also increased her hitting streak to nine games with a RBI double in the first inning.
Senior LHP Janelle Valle (5-2) earned the victory in the circle for Memphis, pitching six and a third strong innings. Valle allowed one run on four hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Senior Lauren Carley pitched the final two-third innings and allowed no runs on two hits.
Memphis took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Mott led off the frame with a double and scored from third on a double by Phillips. The Tigers then took a 3-0 lead in the second on a two-out homer by Mott, her eighth of the season.
McKinley scored a run on an error in the third inning to give the U of M a 4-0 lead over UCF (18-27, 8-9). The Knights scored its lone run in the two games in the seventh inning on a bases loaded hit by pitch to Vanessa Perez.
UCF had the bases loaded in the seventh inning, but Carley pitched out of the jam to give the Tigers their fourth-straight conference victory.
Ashley Schmitt (1-5) suffered the loss for the Knights, allowing four runs on nine hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
Memphis will look for the three-game series sweep in the final game of the contest on Saturday at 1 p.m.
