MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A three run first inning provided all the offense the University of Memphis softball team would need to take the series opener against UCF, 3-0, on Friday night in the first game of a doubleheader.
Memphis (29-10, 9-6) has won eight-straight games, which matches a school record. The Tigers also won eight games in a row earlier this year and in 2007. UCF falls to 18-26 on the season and 8-8 in C-USA.
Heather Mott, Maddie McKinley and Jessica Phillips collected the only hits for the Tigers with all three coming in the first inning. Mott led off with her seventh double of the season and increased her team season best hitting streak to 10 games and has reached safely in the last 15-straight contests.
McKinley later followed with a one-out RBI single. The hit helped increase the senior's hitting streak to a season best eight games.
Phillips then blasted her 14th home run of the season over the left field fence to give the Tigers' their 3-0 lead. The home run is Phillips' fifth in eight games and she has hit safely in eight-straight games. The junior continues to add to her school season record for homers.
Carly Hummel (17-4) scattered three hits for her seventh shutout of the season. The sophomore RHP struck out seven batters and walked three. Hummel's seven shutouts is a new school season record and is the team's 13th shutout of the year.
The two teams play the second game of the doubleheader on Friday and then close the series with a single game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
