MEMPHIS, Tenn. – One good hitting inning from visiting Tulsa was enough to down the University of Memphis softball team, 4-1, in its series opener with the Golden Hurricane in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday at the Tiger Softball Complex.

Memphis falls to 21-8 (6-4 C-USA) with the loss, while Tulsa improves to 25-9 (8-2 C-USA).

Pitching ruled the day through the game’s first five innings, with neither team able to scratch a hit off either of the hurlers; the pitching match-up was a duel of top conference hurlers in Memphis’ Carly Hummel and Tulsa’s Aimee Creger.

Tulsa broke through in the top of the sixth, with back-to-back extra base hits from Caitlin Everett and Jill Barrett pushing across the first run for the Golden Hurricane.

Following a hit batsman, Tulsa’s Skylar Swanson crushed a home run to left-center to put Tulsa up, 4-0.

The Tigers would get one back in the bottom half of the inning. Senior Heather Mott was hit by a pitch and junior Lelani Bernardino walked. They each advanced two bases, with Mott scoring, on two separate passed balls by Tulsa’s Cassidy Bowen.

Hummel shut Tulsa down in the seventh, but Memphis’ comeback fell short.

Hummel was efficient in the loss, going the distance for her 11th complete game of the season. She scattered three hits and struck out nine while allowing the aforementioned four runs.

For Hummel, it was her most strike outs in a game since her school-record 19 punch outs against Texas A&M, March 6.

Creger improved to 13-1 with the complete-game victory, striking out 15.

Memphis and Tulsa continue the three-game series with game two of the doubleheader Saturday afternoon. The two teams close the series on Sunday with a noon contest.
