Memphis Drops Game Two to Houston, 8-0

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis softball team dropped game two of its doubleheader, Saturday, to visiting Houston, a five-inning affair the Cougars won, 8-0.
Memphis moves to 17-6 on the season and 2-3 in conference play. Houston is now 18-11 and also 2-3 in C-USA action.
Sophomore Lauren Carley kept Houston off the board early with two scoreless innings. In the third, however, the Cougars struck with four runs. Two came on a Reina Gaber single, with two more coming around on a Melissa Gregson double.
A Katy Beth Sherman double pushed across another Houston run in the fourth, making the score 5-0.
Houston pushed across three more runs in the fifth, with the first two coming off of Carley. Jennifer Klinkert doubled in Haley Outon, which signaled the end of Carley's outing. Freshman Ellen Roberts came on in relief, giving up a home run to Brooke Lathan that also scored Klinkert.
Senior Kailey Kassner led off the bottom of the fifth with a single for the Tigers' lone hit of the game. Alyssa Palmieri reached on a fielder's choice that gave Memphis two on and one out, but Amanda Crabtree came in and struck out the next two Tigers to end the game.
Senior Heather Mott had her second consecutive game with five assists, tying her season high.
Carley picked up the loss, moving her to 2-2 in 2011. Houston's Donna Bourgeois picked up the victory, to improve to 5-6 on the year.
The series with the Cougars will conclude tomorrow with game three. First pitch is scheduled for noon at the Tiger Softball Complex.
