ATLANTA, Ga. - A sixth-inning triple by Heather Mott and a dazzling two-hitter in the circle by Carly Hummel led the University of Memphis to a 1-0 victory over Appalachian State at the Panther Invitational on Saturday.
Mott led-off the sixth inning with a triple down the right field line and was followed by an RBI single through the left side from Maddie McKinley to score the only run in the game and give the Tigers (4-2) a 1-0 lead.
Hummel struck out eight to earn her second shutout of the season and improve to 4-0 on the year. The sophomore retired the first 12-straight ASU batters before Allie Cashion led off the bottom of the fifth with a single.
The Tigers looked to have something brewing in the fifth inning after a lead-off double by Kamri Chester. A sacrifice bunt by Keanah Prestridge advanced Chester to third. Pinch hitter Amber Lindahl then grounded to third and Appalachian State third baseman Meghan Smith elected to throw home. Chester was ruled out on the play. Memphis would end the inning without getting on the board.
McKinley led the Tigers with a 2-for-3 performance. The Memphis bats struggled a little against ASU's Louise Gibson (0-2) who struck out six and allowed one run on four hits with two walks.
Memphis improves to 4-2 on the year while earning its second-straight one-run victory. The game marked the fourth time this season the Tigers have been involved in a one-run decision out of six games. Memphis is 2-2 in one-run games this year. Hummel moved into second all-time in school history with 237 career strikeouts, surpassing Nicki Johnson's 234 from 2006-07. Jenna Kubesch holds the school record with 401 K's in two seasons (2006-07).
The Tigers will next play tournament host Georgia State at 4:45 p.m. ET today in the Panther Invitational. Memphis will play Lipscomb in the tournament on Sunday at 10 a.m. ET and a TBD game at 2:30 p.m.
