Memphis Falls to Marshall, 85-70

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - Marshall turned 13 Memphis turnovers into 22 points and made 24 free throws en route to defeating the Tigers 85-70 Saturday night in Cam Henderson Center.
Memphis took its only lead of the game at the 12:25 mark of the first half when a jumper from Barton gave the Tigers a 12-11 advantage. The Thundering Herd then went on a 21-5 run over the next eight minutes and took a 39-27 lead at halftime.
Marshall extended its lead to as many as 17 in the second half before Memphis fought back to narrow the margin to 64-59 with 7:19 left to play. The Thundering Herd responded with a 7-0 run, however, and the Tigers would come no closer than 12 in the final five minutes of the game.
DeAndre Kane led Marshall with 20 points on 6-of-14 shooting. Damier Pitts and Nigelm Spikes each scored 17, and Shaquille Johnson also reached double figures with 10 points.
Tarik Black scored 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting for the Tigers in the losing effort, and Joe Jackson finished with 12 points. Drew Barham was the only Tiger that could find his range from deep, making 3-of-4 from long range for nine points, but Memphis shot just 4-of-19 (21.1 percent) from beyond the arc as a team.
With the loss, Memphis falls to 4-2 on the season in league competition. Memphis previously defeated Marshall 77-61 on Jan. 15 at FedExForum in the first of four-straight C-USA victories.
After holding their last three opponents to under 18 percent from three-point range, the Tigers allowed the Thundering Herd to connect on 7-of-22 from beyond the arc. Marshall also outrebounded Memphis 38-34.
Memphis returns home for a midweek matchup Wednesday, Feb. 2, against Tulsa at FedExForum. Game time is slated for 6 p.m. (CDT), and the matchup is scheduled to be televised by CBS College Sports.
