Memphis Splits with UAB, Falling 5-2 in Game Two

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Memphis dropped the second game of a doubleheader with UAB on Saturday at the UAB Softball Field, 5-2.
The Tigers split the doubleheader with the Blazers after winning game one, 4-1.
Memphis took a two-run lead in the third inning on a two-out double by Maddie McKinley. But UAB scored four runs in the bottom of the inning and held the Tigers scoreless the rest of the way.
Senior RHP Vanessa Walle (8-10) suffered the loss after giving up four runs on six hits in 2 1/3 innings. Junior Lauren Carley pitched the final 3 2/3 innings and allowed one run on three hits with a strikeout.
The Tigers fall to 24-21 on the season and 8-11 in Conference USA play, while UAB improves to 33-18 and 12-8.
UAB's Lauren Webster held Memphis to just three hits and held the Tigers hitless in the final 4 1/3 innings after giving up the double to McKinley. Webster struck out seven to improve to 16-5.
McKinley gave the U of M a two-run lead in the top of the third. After the first two batters struck out, Keanah Prestridge singled up the middle and Bernardino reached on a fielding error by the third baseman, Cameron Skates. McKinley then doubled off the center field fence to drive in the two runs.
In the bottom of the inning, UAB took the lead for good with four runs on four hits. Martina Landrum led things off with a one out double and scored on a single by Caley Walden. Walden later scored on a double down the left field line by Mandy Lowman. A squeeze bunt by Kayla Orr scored Skates from third, and Kate Armstrong knocked in the fourth run with a single to center.
The Blazers added a fifth run in the fourth inning on a bases loaded sacrifice fly by Lowman to score Landrum.
The two teams will play the rubber match of the series on Sunday at noon. The game was moved up an hour with expected inclement weather in the area in the afternoon.
Game Notes: Heather Mott increased her hitting streak to nine games with a single in the second inning. The hitting streak is a season and career best ... Maddie McKinley hit her ninth double of the season to drive in two runs in the third. It is her 19th career double. McKinley had three RBI in the doubleheader ... Maddie McKinley increased her hitting streak to a career best seven games.
