TULSA, Okla. - Tulsa ended the University of Memphis softball team's regular season with an 8-0 five-inning shutout on Sunday at the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex.
Jackie Lawrence hit a walk-off two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning to run rule the Tigers (24-29, 4-18) who head into the Conference USA Tournament on an eight-game skid. Memphis will compete in the tournament as the ninth seed and will play No. 8 seeded UAB.
The U of M began with two hits in the top of the first, but managed only one hit the remainder of the game. Tulsa's Katie Lee (6-8) struck out a career high nine batters to pick up the win.
Junior Lyndsey Sterling (0-3) started the second game of her career for Memphis in the loss. Sterling pitched a career high four and two-thirds innings and gave up five earned runs on eight hits.
TU took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the second inning. After Brooke Smart reached on a fielding error to lead off the inning, Vanessa Vice doubled to left center to score the first run. Later in the inning, Stephanie Chomicki singled up the middle off the glove of Sterling to score Vice from third.
Three more runners crossed the plate for Tulsa in the third inning. The leadoff batter reached base for the second-straight inning on a fielding error. After a single by Sara Dyer put runners on the corners, Smart singled through the left side to score Timmons. Vice next recorded TU's third-straight hit to score Dyer on a double to right center. Smart scored the third run in the inning on a sacrifice fly to right by Lindsey Tower.
Tulsa scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to complete the run-rule shutout. Tower doubled in a run to right center and was followed by Lawrence's walk-off shot to left center to score two. It is her second walk-off homer in the past week.
Memphis will meet UAB to open the C-USA Championships on Thursday at 9 a.m. in Houston, Texas. The winner will play No. 1 seeded Houston that same day at 5:30 p.m.
