TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Jacksonville scored two unearned runs in extra innings to defeat the University of Memphis softball team, 2-1, at the Sunshine State Tournament on Friday morning.
The team teams went scoreless through the first seven innings until the Dolphins scored in the top of the eighth. The Lady Tigers scored one run and threatened to score more in their half of the inning, but fell short.
Senior Nicki Johnson (2-2) pitched well for the Lady Tigers in the loss. Johnson threw eight innings and allowed seven hits, while striking out four and walking three. Several times the Tucscon, Ariz., native pitched out of jams to keep Jacksonville scoreless. The Dolphins threatened in the third inning when Renee LaCroix hit a two-out triple to right field, but Johnson struck out Ashley Mora to end the inning.
Memphis left 13 runners on base in the game and had runners in scoring position in every inning except the fifth. After senior first baseman Kara Ross doubled to lead off the second inning, the Lady Tigers failed to score after loading the bases with one out. Memphis then fell short in the sixth inning when junior Lindsay Kelso, who had already doubled in the game, was thrown out at second after singling to left to start the inning. Ross followed with her second double of the game but did not advance.
Both teams started the eighth inning with the tiebreaker rule in effect and had a runner start on second. With one out, LaCroix singled up the middle to drive in the first run of the game. A walk and an error loaded the bases for Jacksonville allowing Sara Gordon to hit in the game-winning run with a single.
In the bottom of the eighth, Memphis began with Kelso on second. Ross lead off with a deep fly ball to left field that was caught next to the wall and allowed Kelso to move to third. Senior center fielder Lindsey Pridgen then walked and sophomore second baseman Tori Gross hit a ground ball to short to reach on a fielder's choice and score Kelso. Sophomore left fielder Leandra Hines followed with a single for her second hit in the game to put runners on first and second with two outs, but Jacksonville pitcher Katie Buell picked up her seventh strikeout to end the game.
Memphis (4-3) will next play South Carolina (6-0) at approximately 1:30 p.m. (EST) today in the tournament hosted by No. 22 Florida State at JoAnne Graf Field.
