Running back nominated for award honoring Texas football legend
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Sophomore running back Patrick Taylor, Jr. has been named to the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List, the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce announced Tuesday. The award is given annually to the top offensive player in Division 1 football who exhibits the characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, and tenacity to persist in the pursuit of reaching goals.
In addition to the above characteristics, the nominees must meet one or more of the following criteria: be born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas high school and/or play at a Texas-based junior college or four year college. Taylor was an all-district running back for Atascocita High School in Texas.
Taylor played in all 13 games as a true freshman in 2016 and was the team's second-leading rusher with 546 yards and two touchdowns on 93 carries. He played a part in the 2016 Memphis offense that was second in program history for total yards (6,028), points (505) and total TD (57).
Also active in the community, Taylor has been a regular volunteer for a number of community service initiatives, including with Le Bonheur Children's Hospital.
The Tigers open their 2017 season with a special Labor Day weekend/Thursday night game against Louisiana-Monroe Aug. 31. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. (CT) at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.
