Memphis returns its top three hitters for the 2017 season
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis softball team was picked to finish fifth in the 2017 American Athletic Conference Softball Preseason Coaches' Poll, as selected by the conference's head coaches.
Â
Memphis returns its three top hitters in Lindsay Crowdus, Lindsey Stickrod, and Kyler Trosclair as well as its top-returning pitcher in Molly Smith. Crowdus, Stickrod, and Trosclair all hit over .300 last season and Smith led the team with a 2.91 ERA in 149.0 innings pitched.
Â
Tulsa, an NCAA Tournament team from a year ago, received four of the seven first-place votes for 34 total points to claim the top honor in the poll. The Golden Hurricane won its first American Athletic Conference Championship last season.
Â
The Florida schools rounded out the top three with USF coming in second and UCF in third. Houston finished fourth in the poll while UConn and East Carolina came behind Memphis in sixth and seventh place.
Â
The Tigers have three home tournaments this season in The Blue's City Classic (March 3-5), the UofM Softball Tournament (March 10-12), and the Tiger Classic (March 17-18) as well as 27 home contests. Throughout the year, Memphis will compete against five schools in Power Five conferences in Arkansas, Kentucky, Indiana, Texas A&M, and Ole Miss. In all, five non-conference opponents (Florida Atlantic, Kentucky, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, and Fordham) qualified for the 2016 NCAA Tournament.
