Rush “Cotton” Clifford played football for Coach Ralph Hatley in the early 1950s. He came to then Memphis State from Whitehaven High School where he learned and played football for two former Tiger greats, Tom Nix and John Michael. He received all-county honors while playing for Whitehaven HS. He worked as both an offensive and defensive lineman for Memphis State, working as a guard and tackle from 1952 through 1956. He missed the 1953 season due to an injury. Clifford served as co-captain of the tam in 1956 with All-American Andy Nelson and received Little All-America honors 1956.
