Fred Medling played football for the Memphis State College squads from 1947 through the 1949 season. He worked as an offensive center and a defensive lineman for three seasons under head coach Ralph Hatley and is one of the players who is given credit for helping to restart the football program after World War II. The 1947 team had a record of 6-2-1 and the 1948 squad was 6-5 but in 1949, the Tigers put together a 9-1-0 record with the lone loss coming against Ole Miss. The Tigers defeated Kansas State in 1949 marking the first major college victory in school history.
