Calvin Allen was a standout football player for the Tigers following World War II. Allen played offensive guard and defensive line for the Tigers from 1947 through the 1950 season. He helped put the Tigers on the college football maps during that period with his play for former head coach Ralph Hatley. The Memphis State College Tigers posted a record of 9-1 in 1949 and 9-2 in 1950. During that two year span, the Tigers were ranked second in the nation in scoring offense. For his play, Allen was named to the Williamson’s Little All-America team after the 1950 season.
