Joe Salisbury Advances to Wimbledon Doubles Second Round

Will now face the 12 seeds in second round of Gentlemen's Doubles Draw.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Former Memphis men's tennis player Joe Salisbury and doubles teammate Frederik Nielsen advanced to the second round of the Wimbledon Gentlemen's Doubles draw with a 6-4, 1-0, retired, decision over the French duo of Julien Benneteau and Adrian Mannarino, Thursday.
At four-all in the opening set, a Salisbury return broke serve for his pairing and a 5-4 lead. Nielsen then served out the opening set, 6-4. Following the first set, Benneteau received treatment courtside during a medical timeout.
Nielsen and Salisbury then opened the second set with another break for the early 1-0 lead. Following the break, Benneteau announced he was unable to continue, retiring from the match and pushing Salisbury and Nielsen through to the second round.
The duo will next face the No. 12 seeded team of Rohan Bopanna and Edouard Roger-Vasselin in the second round. Bopanna and Roger-Vasselin are ranked No. 25 and 26 in the world, respectively, in the latest ATP doubles points. Bopanna was a Wimbledon doubles semifinalist in 2015.
This is Salisbury's second appearance at Wimbledon. The London native made his first appearance in the event last year, playing in the gentlemen's doubles and the mixed doubles draws. Currently ranked #80 in the world in doubles play, Salisbury is also playing in the mixed doubles draw again in this year's event, teaming with fellow Brit Katy Dunne.
