Tigers announce 2018-19 men's golf schedule
Jul 25, 2018 | Men's Golf
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis men's golf coach Blake Smart has released the program's 2018-19 schedule, a balanced mix of 10 events (five in the fall, five in the spring) and capped by the American Athletic Conference Championship in late April in Palm Harbor, Florida.
Â
The Tigers welcome back a solid group of returnees led by seniors Bradley Bawden, Jordan Even and Chase Harris and backed by junior Rodi Vlasveld and sophomore Borja Martin.
Â
Memphis opens the season by playing host to the Memphis Intercollegiate Sept. 17 and 18 at Colonial Country Club and travel the following weekend to Knollwood Country Club in Chicago for the Windon Memorial hosted by Northwestern.
Â
After a weekend break, the Tigers participate in The Grove Intercollegiate at College Grove, Tenn., an event hosted by Middle Tennessee. Memphis will be playing in the event for the second straight season after making its debut at The Grove last fall.
Â
Two more fall events follow: the Quail Valley Collegiate Oct. 14-16 at Vero Beach, Fla., and the Kiawah Classic at Turtle Point Golf Club Nov. 4-6 in Kiawah Island, S.C. The Tigers have competed in the perennially strong Quail Valley Collegiate the past three seasons, finishing an impressive fifth in 2015 and a ninth in 2017.
Â
The Tigers open the 2019 spring season with their second consecutive appearance at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate Feb. 25 and 26 at Hilton Head, S.C. Despite being shorthanded, Memphis battled to a fourth-place finish at Wexford last spring.
Â
The following weekend, Memphis goes to Bluffton, S.C., to participate in the Colleton River Intercollegiate held on the Pete Dye Course at Colleton River Plantation. A third consecutive weekend to open the spring has the Tigers playing in the Palmetto Intercollegiate in Aiken, S.C. Memphis finished sixth in the event last spring.
Â
The spring season closes with a trip to the Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate April 5-7 at the Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn., and a familiar trek to the Old Waverly Intercollegiate April 15 and 16 at West Point, Miss. The Tigers will be playing Old Waverly for the sixth time in seven seasons.
Â
Beginning April 21, the Tigers will participate in the American Athletic Conference Championship at the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook in Palm Harbor, Fla. Memphis has finished fifth or better at each of the last four championships, including an impressive comeback last season that saw the Tigers claim fourth.
Â
Memphis welcomes several newcomers this season, from freshmen Landon Carner (Birmingham) and Gregory Odom Jr. (Germantown) to junior Isaiah Jackson (Golden, Miss.) and sophomore Guillaume Chevalier (France).
