Second watch list of the week for the Memphis junior.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Junior running back Darrell Henderson was named to the Doak Walker Award Watch List on Wednesday. This is the second watch list of the week for Henderson, who was named to the Maxwell Award Watch List, Monday.
Henderson posted the first 1,000-yard rushing season since 2009 for the Tigers last year, finishing with 1,154 yards on 130 carries. His 2017 rushing yards total ranked sixth in the Memphis single season record book, and he enters his junior campaign needing just 334 yards to break into the career top 10 at Memphis.
The Batesville, Mississippi, native appeared in 12 of the Tigers' 13 games last year, missing the AutoZone Liberty Bowl due to injury. He posted seven 100-plus yard rushing games in 2017, a mark that trails just DeAngelo Williams (34), Curtis Steele (12) and Gerard Arnold (11) in the Tigers' record book and ties the mark set by M Club Hall of Famer Dave Casinelli. Only Williams and Henderson had seven 100-plus yard rushing games in a single season.
In addition to his threat off the rush, Henderson grabbed 24 catches for 224 yards and two touchdowns. He also ranked second on the squad in kickoff return yards, with 13 returns for 250 yards (19.2 ypr).
Named a Touchdown Club of Columbus Player to Watch for 2018, Henderson is one of three backs from the American Athletic Conference on Wednesday's watch list. Temple's Ryquell Armstead and SMU's Xavier Jones are also featured on the preseason list.
The Tigers are in the final stages of prepping for fall camp, which opens on Thursday, August 2. After the American Athletic Conference media day event in Newport, Rhode Island, next Monday and Tuesday, the team will meet on August 2 and will step on the field for its first practice on Friday, August 3.
