Salisbury advances to semifinals of Gentlemen's Doubles at Wimbledon

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Former Tiger Joe Salisbury and partner Frederik Nielsen's run in the Gentlemen's Doubles draw at Wimbledon continued with a four-set victory against the 14th-seeded team of Ben McLachlan and Jan-Lennard Struff in the quarterfinal round on Tuesday.
Salisbury and Nielsen advance to the semifinals and will face No. 13 seed Raven Klaasen/Michael Venus on Thursday.
In a marathon match that saw just one service break, Salisbury and Nielsen claimed three tiebreaks to secure the win.
Salisbury and Nielsen found an early break point in the opening set's first game, but McLachlan and Struff fought back to force deuce and held.
Both sides continued to hold, and Salisbury delivered four straight service points to even the set at 6-6. In the tiebreak, McLachlan and Struff built a 5-3 lead, but a double fault and two consecutive winners from Salisbury gave the former Tiger and his partner a 6-5 lead. Salisbury later collected another winner for a 7-6 edge, and then held serve to win the first-set tiebreak, 8-6.
Tied 1-1 in the second set, McLachlan and Struff won the match's first break point and then held for a 3-1 lead. Seeking to break back down 3-4, Salisbury delivered a winner to lead 0-30. McLachlan and Stuff once again fought back to force deuce.
Salisbury and Nielsen fought off three straight advantage points on consecutive return winners, but their opponent forced a backhand error to take a 5-3 set lead. Struff later held serve in the final game for a 6-4 win and level the match at one set each.
McLachlan and Stuff held a pair of break points to open the third set, but Nielsen fought back for deuce and then held serve. Both sides continued to hold until the tiebreak, when Salisbury held to open and then tallied two return winners to give his team a 3-0 lead. The duo collected two more winners and served out the tiebreak to lead two sets to one.
Down 2-3 in the fourth set, Salisbury delivered the match's largest hold after McLachlan and Stuff held a pair of break points. Salisbury won both break points to force deuce, and then collected two more to hold at 3-3.
Salisbury enjoyed a successful day at the service line. The London native won 45 of his 57 service points outside of the tiebreak, including 17 consecutive points on serve between the first and second sets.
