Bowen begins his four-year term immediately.
MEMPHIS – University of Memphis Athletic Director Tom Bowen has been named to the NCAA Division I Football Oversight Committee effective immediately it was announced by the NCAA Friday. Bowen's term of service on the committee will continue through June 30, 2022.
The Football Oversight Committee ensures appropriate oversight of football for both the FBS and FCS divisions of college football. With at least 16 members, 12 of them voting members, the Football Oversight Committee also supervises the licensing of postseason bowls and qualifications and/or selection procedures for the FCS Championship. The group is made up of representatives from each divisional subgroup that sponsors football and provides direction to the NCAA Football Rules Committee.
"Congratulations to Tom being named to the prestigious NCAA Division I Football Oversight Committee," said UofM President M. David Rudd. "This is a well-deserved honor, and one the University of Memphis takes with great pride. The UofM is in the midst of the greatest period in Tigers football history, and Tom has played a vital role. This honor further enhances the continued growth of our athletics program under Tom's leadership with his and the University of Memphis' representation on a national football committee."
Bowen has been leading the Memphis Athletic Department since June 2012. In that time, he has reorganized the Athletic Department and oversaw a conference transition that saw Memphis move from Conference USA, to the BIG EAST, to the American Athletic Conference. He also created a strategic plan for fundraising that resulted in improvements to the Elma Roane Fieldhouse and new facilities for softball, track and field, volleyball and the newly-opened Laurie-Walton Family Basketball Center. That strategic plan will mark its completion when construction on the football practice facility begins this summer.
Off the field, Memphis Athletics has experienced tremendous improvements in all areas, including the Graduation Success Rate, which has increased every year with Bowen as the Athletic Director, from 81 percent to an all-time high of 87 percent in the latest publicized cohort (2010-11). Additionally, for the fifth-consecutive year, the UofM led the American Athletic Conference with six AAC Team Excellence Awards. AAC Team Academic Excellence Awards are given to programs with the highest collective GPA in each of the 21 league-sponsored sports.
