Wind caps career as first four-time all-conference selection
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – For the fourth time in her illustrious career, Memphis women's tennis senior Anki Wind has been named an American Athletic Conference all-conference selection, the league office announced Thursday afternoon.
Voted by the league coaches, Wind completes her career as The American's first four-time all-conference selection. Wind was also listed to the AAC's all-conference team in 2014, 2015 and 2017.
"Coach Haymond and I are extremely proud of Anki being named all-conference this year. It is something she should take great pride in and understand was the result of hard work and dedication to her sport and her team," head coach Hayden Perez said. "Anki's situation was unique this year after returning from ACL surgery last season. She did not have the benefit of playing in the fall and gaining both experience and confidence in her game. She had to prepare herself both physically and mentally for the grind that comes with a spring season saturated with match play with no fall season to help her prepare."
The Dinslaken, Germany native tallied a 16-4 singles record this spring while primarily playing at the top of the lineup. In doubles, Wind collected an 11-11 mark and went 7-1 in her final eight matches. Wind also tallied a ranked win against ECU's Celia Ruiz earlier this season.
After battling back from a 2016 knee injury to turn in a solid redshirt junior campaign, Wind faced a similar challenge this year after the same injury cut her 2017 season short. Named the University of Memphis' Comeback Player of the Year, Wind was also tabbed the league's Player of the Week twice this season.
"I remember hand-feeding her balls while she was sitting in a chair on court with her leg fully wrapped and propped up just days after her surgery last April," Perez added of Wind's recovery. "She was determined to come back as strong as she was before the injury and her dedication was amazing. I am glad she proved to herself and to others that with a great work ethic and discipline, you can accomplish anything. The blood, sweat, and tears that went into her comeback were real, and I am just beaming with pride that she was selected all-conference. I can't think of a more deserving player."
