MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis men's tennis seniors Ryan Peniston and Andrew Watson added a pair of accolades to their highly decorated careers, as the two were named to the American Athletic Conference singles and doubles all-conference teams, the league office announced Thursday afternoon.
Thursday's honor marks the third consecutive season Peniston has been named an all-conference selection in singles, while Watson has now earned his second all-conference accolade in singles. This is the first time either player has been listed all-conference in doubles.
"I'm so excited for these two and all they have accomplished in their fours years at Memphis," head coach Paul Goebel said. "These two have helped set the example that hard work and dedication truly pay off."
Peniston is the first Tiger to be named to an AAC all-conference team in three separate seasons. Leading Memphis at the No. 1 position, Peniston is 15-2 in dual match play and has currently matched his career-high national ranking of 35.
Watson, who was also tabbed the league's Freshman of the Year in 2015, currently ranks a season-high No. 89 nationally. The Reigate, Great Britain native has a 17-3 mark in his senior campaign, including a 17-1 record at the No. 2 position.
Playing together in doubles for the first time in their collegiate careers, the tandem has collected a 12-7 record and currently ranks No. 40 nationally. Earlier this season, the duo posted a pair of top-50 wins against Oklahoma State's No. 30 team of Julian Cash and Luke Hammond and defeated Dartmouth's No. 49 team of Charlie Broom and David Horneffer. Peniston and Watson are also the first Tigers doubles team named all-conference since 2015.
"It's been fun to watch them play doubles together this season," Goebel added. "To see them forge a doubles partnership this year, improve their skill in that area of the game and be named all-conference, it's remarkable."
Joining the Tigers on the all-conference singles team is Alberto Barroso-Campos (USF), Ewan Moore (Tulane), Constantin Schmitz (Tulane), Joshua Goodger (Tulsa) and Majed Kilani (Tulsa).
In doubles, Korey Lovett and Eero Vasa (UCF), Barroso-Campos and Grayson Goldin (USF) and Moore and Schmitz (Tulane) were also named all-conference.
