May 26, 2018 | Men's Tennis
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Sparked by a first-set rally, Memphis men's tennis duo of Ryan Peniston and Andrew Watson completed a comeback for a straight-set win and advanced to the semifinal round of the NCAA doubles tournament.
The No. 40 duo defeated Florida's No. 4 Johannes Ingildsen and Alfredo Perez, 7-5, 6-3. Peniston and Watson return to the court Sunday to face 29th-ranked Martin Redlicki and Evan Zhu of UCLA at 3 p.m. (CT). Redlicki and Zhu outlasted Mississippi State's No. 1 Nuno Borges and Strahinja Rakic (4-6, 6-3, 10-7) on Saturday to advance to the semifinals.
"I'm really happy for Ryan and Andrew. I feel as if they are playing better and better each match they play together," head coach Paul Goebel said of the run. "They're having a lot of fun and show a lot of energy on the court. They are playing as a team, and that's what it takes to do well. It's really fun to watch, and I'm really excited to see how they do the rest of the tournament."
Delayed from the outset due to inclement weather, the Tigers found themselves down 2-4 in the opening frame when action was forced to move indoors. Once play resumed, the Tigers found their stride and broke back at 4-4 and then used the momentum to take the first set.
Memphis continued the pace in the second set and quickly went up 2-1 earned a break for a 3-1 advantage. The senior duo had built a 5-3 lead when Watson held serve for the match in four straight points to seal the 7-5, 6-3 win.
