Tigers notch first program win in NCAA doubles tournament
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Memphis men's tennis swept its doubleheader action in the NCAA Tournament on Thursday, as Ryan Peniston won his second-round match in singles play, while Peniston and partner Andrew Watson were victorious in the first round of the doubles tournament.
After defeating No. 55 Carlos Divar of Georgia Tech to open singles play, Peniston delivered another straight-set win on Thursday. The Great Britain native defeated No. 15 Constantin Schmitz of Tulane, 6-1, 6-4. The win gives Peniston a 3-1 mark against Schmitz in his collegiate career, including a three-set thriller to help Memphis defeat the Green Wave in dual match play earlier this season.
Peniston will face No. 4 Petros Chrysochos of Wake Forest in the Round of 16 on Friday with first serve set for 9 a.m. (CT).
Peniston found a strong start with an early break and used the momentum for a 6-1 win in the first set. After Peniston and Schmitz held serve through the first four games of the second frame, Peniston earned a pair of break points to take a 5-2 advantage. Despite a brief rally from Schmitz, Peniston held serve to seal the victory.
Wake Forest's Chrysochos opened with a 5-0 lead in the opening set of the second round in singles before his opponent, William Bushamuka of Kentucky, retired due to injury. Chrysochos tallied a 26-1 record through the dual match portion of the Demon Deacons' season, primarily at the No. 2 position.
In doubles action, the Tiger tandem of Peniston and Watson notched the program's first win in the NCAA doubles tournament with a 6-3, 5-7, 10-5 victory against Wake Forest's team of 35th-ranked Chrysochos and Bar Botzer.
The No. 40-ranked senior duo took the first set 6-3, capped by three straight aces from Watson, and jumped out to a 4-2 lead in second frame. The Deacons found a rally with a couple break points late to win the second set. The Tigers found another good start in the 10-point tiebreak with a 6-3 lead, and then claimed the last four points to seal the victory.
Peniston and Watson will face USC's 10th-ranked team of Brandon Holt and Riley Smith on Friday with first serve at 1 p.m. (CT).
